Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st August 2025 Outline

It was St Teresa of Avila who said to God: “If this is how you treat your friends, it is no wonder you have so few!” It is a statement Job too could well have made. He wanted to speak to God directly instead of talking to his friends who were proving to be worthless physicians (Job 13:13). They were only adding insult to injury as their words were only adding to his agony instead of bringing healing to his suffering (Job 13:3-4). They bring to mind a prayer of Yoruba people to their Orisha divinity, “If you will not improve my fortune, leave me the way you found me!”

Wisely, therefore, Job turned his plea once again to God. What two things did he request (Job 13:20-21)? Look at his many other questions in Job 13:23-25. Not realising that all his sins had been forgiven (Job 13:26), what else could he have done? What do you do when you do not know what else to do? When a man is flat on his back, all he can do is to look up. That was what Job did.

Insight
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Blessed assurance
1. Blessèd assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

3. Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

Closing Prayer
Do you know any child of God currently facing serious problems. Pray for him to have the grace to turn to God who alone can rescue him from despair.
